MONTANA EMU RANCH COMPANY

Standards for Emu Oil

Montana Emu Ranch Company manufactures two lines of products-Montana Emu Ranch (Nutritional Supplements), Laid in Montana (Personal Care Products) and Montana Emu Ranch (Products for Pet & Livestock).  We are the ranch that raises the Emu.  We monitor every step of the process to produce the finest quality Emu Oil products on the market today.  My wife, Penni, and I started the Montana Emu Ranch in 1993, and we began our Laid in Montana Brand in 1998. We added the Montana Emu Ranch Company Nutritional line in 2004.

Emu are originally from Australia where they were hunted almost to extinction.  Australia then realized the value of the bird, and they are now the country’s national bird and are protected!  The population is now thriving in the Outback of Australia. Originally the birds in this country were brought in to zoos in the 1930's and 40's.  Since they are such prolific breeders, the zoos began to sell the Emu to ranches across the country to raise for their very lean red meat. Emu are not endangered and none of the birds processed world wide are taken from the wild.

The Montana Emu Ranch consists of 40 acres in NW Montana where our Emu are raised free range.  We handle pretty much every aspect of production from our own farm.  Different feeds are used for different stages of growth, all produced by Lakeland Feeds located in Hamilton, Montana.  Mike (owner) at Lakeland Milling, Inc. prides himself that his mill and all feed formulas are free of "Animal by-products".  Although Emu are omnivores, we feed a totally vegetarian diet that is high in protein, free of added growth hormones, and contains no anti-biotic.  All our birds are fed free choice whether they are baby chicks, yearlings, or breeders.

Emu are very hearty, therefore, there is no need to use antibiotics, and we refuse to use growth hormones.  Animals, including Emu and people, store toxins in their fat, so it is crucial that we feed a very clean wholesome diet that is totally free of toxins. Clean, fresh deep-well water is available at all times.

All processing is done in Montana State or U.S.D.A. inspected facilities. This insures the birds are handled humanely and precautions are taken to control bacteria during processing. All parts of the birds are used: meat, oil, feathers, bones, etc.

Our Emu oil is single batched, meaning all fat used to produce our oil is from birds grown on our ranch. (Many other facilities blend oils from various ranches so that there is less assurance of quality or freshness). The refining process is to eliminate impurities (free fatty acids and peroxide levels).  Each batch of oil is tested by an independent lab and measured for various fatty acid content, color, odor, and stability. Our emu fat is consistently rated within the top 2% of fat produced in the nation based on cleanliness, color, and yield.  Our Emu oil is very stable, odor free and highly active.

Laid in Montana Emu Products include our complete line of "All Natural" topical products which are manufactured locally so that I can supervise every aspect of the production.  The company that manufactures the majority of our topical products is an organically certified lab that grows and processes their own herbal extracts and tinctures that are used in these products.  The criterion set forth with the "Laid in Montana" brand is that we use absolutely NO petroleum by-products, artificial coloring or scents, and no chemical preservatives.  Our goal with this line is to provide nutritional balance to the skin and reduce toxicity.

We use every part of the emu including the red meat that is very beef-like in flavor and texture, lending itself very well to beef or veal recipes.  Nutritionally, emu is similar to chicken as emu meat is 98% fat free!  Many people who purchase emu are people who are trying to reduce saturated fats in their diet due to a variety of health concerns.  Emu meat is recommended by the American Heart Association.

Emu oil is advantageous to use in combination with other nutrients because Emu oil is a natural anti-inflammatory and trans-dermal carrier.  Combined with nutritional supplements, Emu oil is proven to reduce bad cholesterol as much as 30-50 points while raising the good cholesterol and improving the HDL/LDL Ratio.  Pilot studies done at the University of Massachusetts have proven Emu oil will transport other nutrients into the blood stream and that Emu oil is a superior anti-inflammatory to both fish and flaxseed oils. It also has superior wound healing and anti-aging properties.
